The other good one is ellipsis. You only use three dots - ... - unless you're at the end of the sentence, then you use 4, with the last one being the period. Even Word knows that (look at the spacing). Word to your nanna.swisslethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16708248700851998044noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1750120863647373520.post-77077726636199959652013-10-14T22:58:37.193+01:002013-10-14T22:58:37.193+01:00Oddly i argued with guys at work over this exact t...Oddly i argued with guys at work over this exact thing a while back. Also the one that really gets me, is whether you need a period after a question mark?

My view is that the period is there already in the symbol, so no you don't.TheNumNumhttp://thenumnum.netnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1750120863647373520.post-56560263655942897552013-10-10T03:01:17.143+01:002013-10-10T03:01:17.143+01:00Its a typewriter tradition I believe; with typewri...Its a typewriter tradition I believe; with typewriters there was a mechanical (etiquette?) reason for having a greater space after a period.

With the advent electronic photoset devices, runs of large spaces of white were ignored, so there was a gradual trend away from using 1.5 or double spacing.

At least that was what I was taught. Now I know why I feel so comfortable with it! I'm not sure I want to wean myself off this habit or not (even if I can). Now I know it's wrong though, it's going to annoy me. Or, I could just not care on the grounds that no one else has ever mentioned this to me in the past.... so why change now?swisslethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16708248700851998044noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1750120863647373520.post-13283521024640515192013-10-09T21:38:29.391+01:002013-10-09T21:38:29.391+01:00I still tend to use a double-space after a period ...I still tend to use a double-space after a period when typing. Although I'm slowly breaking myself of the habit. One nice thing about the habit is that HTML automatically ignores the second space, and formats it with only one.

Another aspect about it is iOS. When I type two spaces, the first one is replaced by a period, thus reinforcing the habit. Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05201444579451608701noreply@blogger.com
