The cathedral was actually built on the site of the slave market, with the alter -- blood red and black, symbolising blood and skin colour -- is directly over the site of the tree that slaves were whipped against before being sold. Cry out, and you were no good for hard labour. The missionaries in africa did lots of things wrong, but pushing for the abolition of that abhorrent trade was something they got very right.
