They filmed the "Sweet Soul Sister" video that night, and I'm pretty sure I'm in there near the front somewhere, but I haven't had the courage to look as I can't stand the thought of what the 15 year old me looked like.swisslethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16708248700851998044noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1750120863647373520.post-71352309347305293882013-05-22T18:53:00.668+01:002013-05-22T18:53:00.668+01:00(credit to the culture show too - I nicked the pos...(credit to the culture show too - I nicked the post title entirely from their use of it for that show!)swisslethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16708248700851998044noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1750120863647373520.post-60301260193556368082013-05-22T16:57:35.349+01:002013-05-22T16:57:35.349+01:00last week i was on holiday and whilst talking abou...last week i was on holiday and whilst talking about music, my sister-in-law asked me who my favourite band of all time was - my stock answer when asked this (and being ONE OF THOSE BLOKES, i have a ready-prepared answer for just these occasions) is to say the Velvet Underground - the stylistic shifts between their 4 official albums, the way they broadened the vocabulary (literally and sonically) of the kind of things a 'rock band' could do - plus in pretty much all of their photos from 1965-1968 they looked as COOL as the proverbial - never mind the fact that their legendary gigs as part of Andy Warhol's Exploding Plastic Inevitable were woefully ill-attended.

anyway, the day after, i was a bit under the weather so i stayed in and watched the Culture Show Special about The Smiths - immediately i was back, revising for my GCSE mock-exams and listening to 'Hatful of Hollow'. i think i'm a bit older than you so i also remember their first TOTP appearance, along with sets on The Tube and Whistle Test. they always seemed to be in Smash Hits (my pubescent music-mag of choice) too!

i was gutted when they split-up the year before i was allowed to go to gigs (FIRST GIG: Wedding Present, Derby, 1988), so i never got to see them live.

but when i bought the gorgeous box-set of the remastered albums when it came out a couple of years ago, i was pleased to realise that i still knew all the words by heart.

(can't remember a fricking thing about my GCSEs, mind...)

long story short - my favourite band of all time is still the Velvet Underground.

but there has never been (nor will there ever be) a band that meant SO MUCH to me the way that The Smiths did - and continue to do so.stevedominohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08598042606017502408noreply@blogger.com
