open book....

For my holiday reading this year, I've decided that I'm going to leave the Kindle at home.  It's not that I don't think it would stand up to the rigours of two weeks in the back of a truck in Africa - I'm sure it would be fine and it probably wouldn't even need to be recharged in that time either - it's just that the books I've decided to read aren't available electronically yet.

So, yeah.  To cut a long story short, I'll be taking actual books with me.  Made of paper and everything.

I know!  Old school.

C. will be taking her Kindle, however.  I'm not sure she could stand to be apart from it for that long, to be honest.  When I told her that I wasn't going to be taking mine with me, she looked at me oddly and asked me if I knew that we would be spending long hours in the back of the truck travelling and that there would probably be lots of opportunity to read.   Um.  Yes.  That's why I'll be taking a couple of books with me.

Actually, having said that, when we did a very similar trip through South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and Zambia in May last year, I took "David Copperfield" with me.  In the course of three weeks, I read the grand total of one chapter.  I had so much fun on those long drives messing around with the other guys in our group or just staring out of the window at the stunning landscape we were driving through, that it just wasn't something I wanted to spend my time doing.  I'm hoping it will be the same again this time, although we'll be incredibly lucky to get a group that is half as much fun, so obviously I won't be so foolish as to travel without any reading material at all.....

So what are these books that are so obscure as not to be available electronically for the Kindle?

Oh, you probably haven't heard of them.

"Jaws" by Peter Benchley and "Jurassic Park" by Michael Crichton.  Only two of the best selling books EVER.  Still, I picked them up for buttons and will be enjoying my pulp fiction very much as we make our way through Kenya and Tanzania.

.... although perhaps I should try and make sure that I finish "Jaws" long before I go diving off Zanzibar, yeah?
